[JOLSE] Olivarrier Dual Moist Toning Lotion 180ml Review

Jolse is one of my favourite K-Beauty sites to purchase from. They're generous with the samples, offer free shipping and have regular sales. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, regular competitions to win new products to review! I finally got the chance to try out a brand I've seen making the rounds on IG - Olivarrier.

Olivarrier gets its name from the combination of olive + barrier. Their brand rests on the principle of using olive-derived squalane to moisturise and nourish the skin without sensitising it. All of their produces are free of fragrance, preservatives and colouring agents. I was lucky enough to win the Toning Lotion, which is meant to be good for dry and sensitive skin because of its ingredients and pH balanced solution.

Product claims
(From Jolse)
  • A pH 5.5 acidulous toner for the healthy skin that protects the skin from germs.
  • The toning lotion eliminates skin wastes and dead skin cells while adjusting the oil-moisture balance for healthy skin conditions.
  • The odorless, colorless, and hypo-allergenic ingredients care the skin fully.
  • The dual moist moisturizing understands the skin by preventing moisture loss by smearing lightly into the skin with squalane and hyaluronic acid.

Packaging
180mL of liquid in an opaque, plastic bottle. I can track how much is left in there by holding it up to a bright light. After opening, it is advised to use the product within 12 months. The bottle comes in a glossy paper box that has both English and Korean descriptions.

Ingredients
Water, Glycerin, Glycereth-26, Butylene Glycol, Squalane, Sodium Hyaluronate, Panthenol, Madecassoside, Allantoin, Arginine, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Ceramide NP, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Brassica Oleracea Italica (Broccoli) Extract, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Avena Sativa (Oat) Meal Extract, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Sodium Citrate, Disodium EDTA, Octyldodecanol, Dodecane, Isohexadecane, Isoeicosane, Octadecane, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Zanthoxylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Citric Acid, Tetradecane, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Linoleic Acid

Squalane (olive)
Squalane is a deeply hydrating molecule that has a structure similar to our skin's lipids. Two sources of squalane are sharks and olives, which is why cruelty free companies will often make a point of noting what they derived their squalane from.

Sodium hyaluronate
This is the sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid and is also a humentant - it attracts water from the environment into your skin.

Panthenol
Panthenol is a beneficial alcohol that is converted to pantothenic acid when applied topically onto the skin. In its acidic form, it works as a humectant and it has soothing and anti-inflammatory effects when used in the long term.

Madecassoside
Is this the hit ingredient of 2017? Companies such as A'Pieu and Etude house have come out with their own creams with madecassoside as their key ingredient. Madecassoside is derived from the plant centella asiatica, and has soothing and repairing properties.

Ceramide NP
Ceramides are fatty acids that occur naturally in our skin barrier. They can help to soothe and restore dry and flaky skin.

Texture & Scent
A little thicker than water, with some slip to it, but it can still be dispensed evenly onto a cotton pad. The texture is supposedly due to the combination of squalane and glycerin which forms a thin moisture barrier over the skin. Immediately after application it feels sticky and requires some gentle patting to encourage faster absorption. It has no detectable scent.

Experience

As a cleanser
I don't feel comfortable using this as a morning cleanser. And no, not because it does a particularly poor job, but because its slightly dearer price and hydrating properties makes me feel like I'm wasting it by popping it onto a cotton pad that will have minimal contact time with my skin.

Multi-layering
Also known as the 3-step or the 7-step or the I'll-do-however-many-steps-I-feel-like skin method. I like how each layer gives my skin that 'chok chok' feeling. I can feel my skin taking it all in and becoming plumper with hydration.

Mini-masking
Probably one of my favourite ways to use this. I was off to a bad start in August because I slept in my makeup for two consecutive nights, resulting in breakouts in odd areas, clogged pores and more prominent whiteheads. My skin was in need of a moisture bomb but I didn't have time for a full mask in the morning, so I opted for a mini-masking session by pouring some of this onto cotton pads and placing it over my cheeks. 5 minutes later I noticed that my skin appeared visibly calmer, less red and ready for makeup.

Overall I really enjoyed this product. I find myself doing multiple layers most days so I'm going through this product very quickly. If you're after a deeply hydrating toner with soothing properties that is a step up from your budget ones, give this one a go!

Until next time,
