Benton Papaya S-Sun Cream SPF 50+ PA++++ Review

Benton has a new muse and it's... papaya! Papaya has been the inspiration behind their latest sunscreen duo. The first one that came out was the Papaya-D Sun Cream for daily wear and was SPF 38/PA+++, whereas the one that I have received is their latest release, the Papaya-S Sun Cream SPF 50+/PA++++ for sports use.

my opinion of the item.

One of the conditions for receiving the product was that I needed to review it within 7 days, so if you're interested, I posted a first impressions video of the product. I'm still getting a feel for making videos, because I find I don't always cover all the points I wanted to whereas with blogging at least I can keep going back and editing before it posts.

So why papaya?
Benton was inspired by Christopher Columbus, the explorer who called papaya 'the fruit of the angel's'. Papaya contains polyphenols (an antioxidant), minerals and papain, a type of protease. Proteases are enzymes that breakdown proteins and can help to exfoliate the skin.

Claims
This is a physical & chemical sunscreen that will protect the skin from UVA and from UVB rays. The product claims to be a milky sun cream with a water-in-oil emulsion that is resistant to water & sweat. The label says there will be a temporary whitecast due to the physical sunscreen ingredients, which will disappear when tapped and absorbed. The texture is meant to be moist and lightweight; geranium is responsible for the scent.

Recommended for
Skin exposed to frequent outdoor activities
Skin that wants a natural tone-up
Dull skin lacking suppleness
Skin that wants a light, moist sunscreen
Skin that wants protection against UVA/UVB with a minimal whitecast

Packaging
50g of product contained in an opaque, plastic tube. The sun cream should be used within 1 year of opening.

I always find it odd when companies highlight star ingredients which appear quite low in the ingredients list. Papain is the 4th last ingredient here and appears as a tiny fraction of the product. How much papain is significant for exfoliating action, and do I really want a sunscreen that exfoliates my skin as I wear it under the sun?

Texture & Scent
Slight artificial scent. When first dispensed, it's surprisingly thin and milky, however it does need more rubbing to properly spread the product. The only other waterproof sunscreen I've used is the Missha one which was very thick and pasty, so this one felt a lot easier to dispense and use.

Experience
Since it's winter at the moment my skin has shifted from a light-medium shade to a light shade, so the whitecast isn't a massive problem. It's much more noticeable on my red cheeks which appear desaturated after application. In the video the whitecast on my hand appears to disappear but it was probably beacuse I used such a small amount. Irl, I'm more liberal with my sunscreen application so when applied on my face, the whitecast didn't completely disappear even after 10 minutes.

The initial finish was a bit powdery that left a greasy feeling on my fingers. The type that reduces the friction between your fingers and catches onto every bit of dust and lint in your vicinity. On the face it looked extremely dewy and shiny, leaning towards looking oily if I applied more than usual. After 30 minutes the dewy appearance still remained but the finish just felt like my normal skin again.

Is this a moisturising sun cream? No, I don't think so. If anything it feels like a heavier occlusive layer which could help to retain moisture in the skin. I also did a quick waterproof test and tried to gently rub the sunscreen off my hand. After drying it off there was still a noticeable sheen on my hand so it's at least water resistant.

Surprisingly my makeup applies well on top of the sunscreen. It doesn't cause any pilling or patchiness, although towards the end of the day it did cake up around my nose. If you're a dry skin person who's keen on the great outdoors, I think this is a relatively easy sunscreen to work with but oily-skinned crowds might not be a fan of the strong glowy, almost greasy finish.

Until next time,
