Klairs Gentle Black Facial Cleanser Review

Hope you've all been well since 2020 happened and continues to spoil 2021. I don't know what your experience has been like depending on which part of the world you are. In Melbourne we're in our fourth lockdown and I've long lost interest in iso-baking and exercise, so what better impetus to resume blogging again? It coincided with the release of Klairs newest product, their Gentle Black Facial Cleanser which Wishtrend kindly provided for review.

Claims & Ingredients
Low pH cleanser that removes impurities and doesn't leave the skin feeling dry. It's a foam cleanser meant to be safe for sensitive skin and contains truffle, blackberry, nigella sativa seed and soybean extracts for better hydration. I'm far from an expert on ingredients and don't know how much of these extracts are needed to be effective, or if they're even necessary (let me know your thoughts or knowledge!) I chucked the details on CosDNA and it came up with a good safety profile if that is anything to go by.

Water, Glycerin, Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Lauryl Betaine, Hydroxyacetophenone, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Chloride, Decylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol, Laminaria Japonica Extract, Eclipta Prostrata Leaf Extract, Nigella Sativa Seed Extract, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Fructooligosaccharides, Amaranthus Caudatus Seed Extract, Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract, Beta-Glucan, Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Rubus Fruticosus (Blackberry) Fruit Extract, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Tuber Melanosporum Extract, Tocopherol, Ceramide Np, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Aspartic Acid, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8

Packaging
Classic Klairs packaging. Fairly minimalistic, basic colour scheme and sturdy.

Texture & Scent
I'm not a fan of the plastic scent, and they weren't kidding when they said she's dense. The initial consistency is almost balm-like, it requires a firm squeeze (think toothpaste nearing the end of the tube) to slowly dispense a 2cm strip. That could mean it's good for travelling as it's less likely to be knocked about and accidentally create a mess. It lathers up easily especially when combined with a bubble maker so a little goes a long way, making it a cost-effective product.

Swatches of a lip tint, eyeshadow and brow products, and a concealer

Experience
Let's talk function. As a second cleanser, this is more than adequate considering when I tested it on my a base of concealer/brows/cream eyeshadow, without a preceding oil cleanser, these products were removed with light-moderate rubbing. There was a tiny bit of residue from a Kailjumei lip tint but it wasn't a problem when I did my usual double cleanse routine.

Now the gentle aspect I disagree with, at least for my combo skin. It gave me a slight, but noticeable stripping effect that treads on the brink of 'squeaky clean feeling'. It's not a total write-off that I would relegate it as a body cleanser only but with so many other truly gentle cleansers on the market, I can't justify buying this.

Actually the overall product is like if the Laneige Moisturising Foam Cleanser (similar in texture density and scent too) had a character development arc to become a better, lower pH cleanser. The Klairs cleanser would need at least 1 more season of testing and tribulations to achieve self-actualisation If you have more resilient, and perhaps oilier skin and are in search of a product that does the job, however, this could be worth considering as not everyone has had this problem.
