Klairs Mochi BB Cushion

If there was an award for cutest cushion, it would have to go to... Klairs! If you haven't heard of them before, Klairs is a skincare-focused brand that focuses on releasing products suitable for sensitive skin. I've been using their products since I first came across their toner and cleansing oil and have seen great results. A while back they collaborated with Merry Between, a messaging and photo sharing app for couples, to create the Mochi Cushion. Although I purchased this during their Christmas sale last year, I didn't get to use it until recently when the weather warmed up and my dry skin was able to tolerate the matte finish.

SPF
Yes, this has SPF 40 but remember to not rely on the SPF in makeup alone because it usually provides insufficient protection since we don't apply enough on our skin.

Packaging
Minimalist lovers will love this cushion. It's a simple, matte white case that features the face of the Mochi Couple, and the cushion puff makes it look like the character has been tightly squished inside the cushion. I love how hygenic the cushion is too. Instead of a simple hatch that closes over the cushion, the Klairs one has an additional twist-to-lock mechanism, that creates an air-tight seal and delays oxidation of the formula.

The cutest soulless eyes I've seen

The hatch where the cushion puff would normally sit (I threw mine away because it got super dirty). By rotating it, it can be unlocked.

The sponge in this one is much thicker and denser than your standard cushion. When it first arrived the sponge was pure white and the formula was still stuck at the very bottom. It was strangely gratifying pressing down on the sponge and watching the colour emerge.

Thoughts
For some the word 'balm' may set off alarm bells and evoke images of thick, vaseline type textures. I find this looks thicker when I first tap into the cushion with the sponge, but it spreads very easily and comfortably across my skin and doesn't feel heavy.

Supposedly, 3 types of finishes can be achieved according to the method of usage. They may be achieved by following the instructions on the Wishtrend website:

I tested Methods 1 & 3 only. Method 3, where I had to flip the cushion, definitely achieved more of a true matte finish, compared to method 1 which had a semi-matte finish. Naturally the creasing with Method 3 was worse because of the lack of hydration, and this was especially noticeable with my undereyes which have a lot of fine lines and are prone to flaking. With both methods, the foundation will eventually set itself, but Method 3 is a tad quicker

Let's get the ugly photos over and done with. Here I am barefaced, in natural afternoon lighting. In the next photo, you can see that the cushion is too light for my skin, but stubbornness dictated that I had to review it so I didn't feel like I had wasted my money on another product (just wait till my destash post oh the horrors).I've only been colour matched once in store, and that was to the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard. Hopefully that helps you with the exact shade!

I have yellow undertones but super red cheeks. My body is about the same shade as my face, but my neck is more tan. Note the many sunspots, and the small scar on the right side of my forehead.

2 layers on each side.
RHS: Method 3 'Coverage w/ a Matte Finish'
LHS: Method 1 'Full Hydration'

Personally I found that the difference in coverage wasn't all too different. For covering blemishes, they were both light-medium coverage that could just be built up to a medium with the sponge puff. Method 3 provides a stronger redness neutralising effect. Any more than 2, sometimes 3 layers onwards, and the sponge would start wiping away the product. Lately I've felt extra self-conscious because of the additional sun spots on my face. With this cushion it covers a lot of the lighter ones and achieves a more even skin tone.

This is one of the longest lasting cushions I've used to date. After 12 hours of wear I would be super tired and lazily use micellar water to remove my makeup. The amount that came off was surprising. Since the cushion's formula isn't so kind to dry skin, it easily cakes up on me but I still appreciate that it minimalises the orange stain ring on my shirt collars XD Also, beware if a scab is healing and it's still got that flaky ring. The formula will emphasise it and make it look like a little beige spider died on your face.

Korean makeup shades are always extremely limited. Klairs coming out with only 1 shade of this cushion really limits the suitability of this product to a select few.  If you have a light skin tone with oily, possibly even resilient, normal skin, and don't need full coverage, I think you would enjoy using this product. As always, thanks for reading guys.

Until next time,
