Unik Rose Galactomyces Essential Toner Review

When I first received this in the mail and read the ingredients, my heart skipped a beat. I'm a sucker for rose-scented curios so this toner got me excited, especially with its relatively short but sweet ingredients list. Given my previous mild breakout with Unik's Black Snail Serum however, I had to err on the caution with this product.

Disclaimer: I received this toner for review purposes, courtesy of Unique4u.net however this does not influence my opinion of this product.

Claims
'This toner can help to make moisturising, rebalances and softens the sensitive skin with rosa damascena flower water 70% from the most famous roses and galactomyces ferment filtrate 10%.'

Packaging
200 mL of toner contained in a transparent, plastic bottle. I like being able to monitor how much product I have left, so this gets a large tick from me.

Ingredients
Rosa damascena flower water (70%), galactomyces ferment filtrate (10%), butylene glycol, water, glycerin, glycereth-26, 1,2-hexanediol, sodium hyaluronate, caprylyl glycol, allantoin, punica granatum fruit extract, adenosine, fig fruit extract, morus alba fruit extract, ginkgo biloba nut extract, ethylhexylglycerin, rose flower oil, pentylene glycol, aspalathus linearis extract, licorice root extract

Rosa Damascena Flower water - Also known as damask rose, this has antibacterial activities and can hydrate the skin. It also helps to balance the skin and has minor healing properties.
Galactomyces ferment filtrate - High in nutrients, it helps to control oil, even out the skin tone and texture and reduce the appearance of pores.
Allantoin - Has moisturising effects and can help smooth the skin. Also has soothing properties and can be good for acne acars.
Adenosine - Has anti-irritation and anti-inflammatory effects. Has potential anti-wrinkle effects
Punica Granatum fruit extract - also known as pomegranate. It has antioxidant benefits and may help to repair sun damaged and aging skin.

Texture & Scent
Has the same viscosity as water and smells strongly of rosewater (surprise surprise heh)

Experience
The meaning of a toner has come a long way for me since I first adopted a skincare routine. Once, it seemed like an optional pampering step, and now it's a 3rd cleansing/soothing/hydrating step in my nighttime routine or my sole morning cleanser in the mornings. I enjoy waking up to this; when I pour it on a cotton pad and swipe around my face, I can see all the mysterious grime and little hairs that aggregate at night, coming off my skin.

Now I don't recommend this, but I'll be the first to admit there are nights when I'm so tired I crash in bed with my makeup on. On one particular lazy night I reached for the toner because it was the closest product and 4 soaked cotton pads later, I was able to remove much of my foundation. Surprisingly my cheeks weren't red or irritated. My non-waterproof mascara still clung stubbornly to my lashes however the next morning I didn't wake up to any breakouts. For a product that doesn't advocate itself as a proper makeup remover, I'm quite impressed.

So what about its hydration levels? I spent two weeks trying varying layers of this product. The first layer always feels amazing because it's the first hit of skincare my face gets to quench its first. However subsequent layering of this toner doesn't make a significant difference in terms of hydration and plumping because this toner is so light and thin. Normally my smile line on the right side of my face isn't as prominent as the left side, but since trying out this toner I've seen that the line has noticeabley deepened, even though I've maintained all other steps in my skincare routine. The same happened for my right undereye, so evidently my skin isn't getting the hydration it needs. After the 3-skin/7-skin method the film it leaves on my skin becomes very evident.

Overall I found this to be a standard toner that I can use in the mornings to prep my skin without sensitising it, however it doesn't offer my skin sufficient hydration for the winter at least. This will probably be a product I'll neglect until summer rolls around or will be gifting to an oily-skin friend.

Until next time,
